Triumph of Flight.
The Wright Image Group is a nonprofit dedicated to achieving a bold vision: a magnificent new national monument to flight, the Triumph of Flight, itself an engineering marvel, commemorating the many phenomenal achievements in aviation and aerospace. Rising from a tranquil reflecting pool at the monument’s base, it will be surrounded by graceful curvilinear walls, each providing a backdrop for images of the extraordinary events that followed, and will follow, that first powered, sustained, controlled flight in December 1903.
Located at the southwest corner of Interstate 70/75 interchange, the Triumph of Flight monument will be visible up to three miles away to more than 62 million motorists each year. A dramatic facsimile of the Wright Flyer III, the world’s first practical airplane, will soar 270 feet above the ground—an iconic symbol of the achievement of flight.
Surrounding the reflecting pool will be the Evolution of Flight Park. It will trace the history of aviation captured in seven major themes: Triumphs of Courage; Triumphs of Innovation; Triumphs through Adversity; Triumphs in Commercial Aviation; Triumphs in Military Aviation; Triumphs in Space, and Pioneering Triumphs. Life-size bronze castings of Wilbur and Orville Wright, John Glenn, Neil Armstrong and other prominent historical aviation figures will emerge throughout the park. Public art will surround each visitor.
An indoor STEM learning center will inspire interest and possibly a career in aviation. This ten thousand square foot facility will feature a small theater and classroom for films and educational sessions, with space for interactive exhibits on aviation themes.
Nowhere in the world is there a monument to one of mankind’s greatest achievements, flight. If there is one thing that separates us from all other species, it is our ability to discover and learn and pass that knowledge on to our successors. The ultimate achievement of flight is a story that spans millennia—from ancients gazing at the moon to Neil Armstrong’s footprint on the moon. It is a story of triumph. For all the world to see, the Evolution of Flight Park will tell it, and the Triumph of Flight monument will celebrate it.
